History

Nicolas Legat and his wife Nadine Nicolava Legat came to Great Britain in 1923 and opened one of the first studios in London to teach the Russian classical style of ballet which Legat himself had perfected, taking the best and most helpful elements from the teaching he received from various teachers at the Maryinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg and adding from his own knowledge and experience. The evolvement of the Legat System as it came to be known, maybe be traced through Vestris, Noverre, Bournonville, (pere et fils), Johanssen, Legat.

This System has been carefully preserved and taught to many famous dancers, past and present, carried on after the death of Nicolas Legat in 1937 by his wife, Nadine Nicolava-Legat and subsequently after Mme. Legat's illness and enforced retirement in 1967, and ultimate death in 1971 by her appointed successor , Eunice Bartell, Ballet Principal of the Legat School for 20 years.
